(Replies adapted from the knowledge source: http://en.wikipedia.org)

Nutrition refers to the provision, to cells and organisms, of the materials necessary (in the form of food) to support life.

The term “Nutraceutical”, as is evident, combines the words “nutrition” and “pharmaceutical”. Therefore a food or food product that provides health and medical benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease could be referred as nutraceutical in broader sense.

Such products may range from isolated nutrients, dietary supplements and specific diets to genetically engineered foods, herbal products, and processed foods such as cereals, soups, and beverages.

Nutraceuticals is a broad term used to describe any product derived from food sources that provides extra health benefits in addition to the basic nutritional value found in foods.

Such products typically claim to prevent chronic diseases, improve health, delay the aging process, and increase life expectancy. These include dietary supplements in liquid , capsule (gels) or in tablet form and can include vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes, organ tissues, and even metabolites.

A dietary supplement, can be synonymous to food supplement or nutritional supplement. It can be a preparation intended to supplement the diet and provide nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids, or amino acids.

Many nutrients or essential elements may be missing or may not be consumed in sufficient quantity in a person's diet. Some countries define dietary supplements as foods, while in others they are defined as drugs or natural health products.

Probiotics are live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host.
Probiotics are bacteria that help maintain the natural balance of organisms (micro flora) in the intestines. The normal human digestive tract contains about 400 types of probiotic bacteria that reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and promote a healthy digestive system. The largest group of probiotic bacteria in the intestine is lactic acid bacteria, of which Lactobacillus acidophilus, found in yogurt, is the best known. Yeast is also a probiotic substance. Probiotics are also available as dietary supplements.

Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that stimulate the growth and/or activity of bacteria in the digestive system which are beneficial to the health of the body.
